Microplastics and foam pose significant threats to the environment due to their widespread distribution, persistence, and potential to cause ecological harm. These tiny plastic particles, measuring less than 5mm in size, result from the breakdown of larger plastic items, such as bottles and packaging, or from the disintegration of synthetic textiles. Similarly, foam products like expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam, commonly found in packaging materials and disposable containers, break into smaller pieces over time. This fragmentation allows microplastics and foam to enter various ecosystems, including oceans, rivers, and terrestrial environments, with detrimental consequences.

One of the most concerning aspects of microplastics and foam is their long-lasting presence in the environment. Due to their durability and resistance to degradation, these particles persist for decades, if not centuries. This persistence exacerbates the pollution problem, as microplastics and foam accumulate over time and are difficult to remove once introduced into ecosystems. Marine life, including fish and other aquatic organisms, often mistake these small particles for food, leading to ingestion.
